Making a bonnet- experiencing millinery

Monday, 18 November 2013

So if you didn't know, I'm currently studying a costume production degree at university as I've wanted to do costume making since I was about 12. I've learnt so many things already and have now reached a module where I get to learn new skills, exciting!

I get to learn about dancewear, wig dressing, dyeing and breaking down and millinery! Millinery is something I was extremely excited to learn about as hats for some reason fascinate me and lately I've started to really enjoy making hats.

Kinda sucks but millinery was my first module so it's over now which was sad :(. We only had 5 days to learn and make a replica of a chosen image of a hat but adapt it with the materials we had available.  We had to research the 19th century and specifically look at bonnets.
So we had a visiting tutor come in and she was lovely and I learnt so much from her. Anyways I'll post some images now of the process.

So we started off with creating a pattern out of paper. Then I had to do a technique called blocking shown in the pic on the right. I moulded the shape of the back of the head model.

The straw like material was called buckram and creates the stiffness in the hat. The front edge of the brim of the hat (shown) was edged with wire machine stitched on. This creates and helps the hat hold its shape.

The buckram was covered in fabric to make it look more pretty! and then I added decoration and trimming to finish off the hat

These images show the completed bonnet. I'm really proud of what I achieved in the last week. I loved millinery and hope to one day maybe take another course or delve into the world of it in the future.

Hope you like it!!

What I'm wearing:
Shirt- Primark
Leggings- New Look
Khaki Jacket- New Look
Bag- Asos
White Frilly socks- Topshop
Brogues- Primark

My first outfit post woohoo! As you can see I'm not the best at taking photos of myself and I like to pull funny faces as I can't pose to save my life :'). But anyways wanted to post this outfit as I like this look a lot. I'm heading out to a town near me at uni just to have a look round the shops to see what there is. I like to add smart elements to an outfit and then make them casual. I struggle with shirts due to having a chest unfortunately but I love this shirt as it has studs on the collar :) It features a koala print  too and I just couldn't resist that its adorable. I'm also testing out some new shoes I purchased that are different to anything else I have. No doubt I will get blisters as I do with any pair of new shoes, anyone else's feet as weak as mine?? :P
Anyways hope you like it please let me know by commenting :)

Skin Products I've been loving + Bloglovin

Wednesday, 6 November 2013

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
Firstly I've joined Bloglovin so check my blog out on there and follow if you want to of course :)

Right so I'm in the process of editing a video for this but though I would write a blog about it to. Lately I've been trying to get into a good skin care routine as I'm soooo lazy when it comes to it. I just usually use my face wash and that's it. Bad right??
The thing is I know nothing about all the various types of skin care products out there so I think that may be perhaps why I'm not particularly good at it!
Now you'll probably be like why the hell would I take advice from her haha I wouldn't blame you :P

However I just wanted to do this to just show you products that I have taken a shining to and maybe show a product that may interest you to try it out.

Nip + Fab Pistachio Sundae is a favourite of mine :)

Nip+Fab Body Butter Pistachio Sundae 200ml

*I love this stuff. I'm not the biggest fan of applying moisturisers as the usual ones take ages to dry and I'm a tad impatient. However I saw this in Boots and I just had to try it out. Now I think this is a love or hate product due to the smell of it. Personally I love the smell but some people I can imagine get quite sick of it. I wouldn't say its pistachio scented. The fragrance lingers on your skin, it's not too thick and it leaves my skin feeling really smooth!

Witch Naturally Clear Oil Control Foaming Face Wash

I did get this product because it was by the brand Witch and I have an obsession with witches (pathetic I know) but things like that get me excited. It was also relatively cheap so thought I'd give it a go! and I'm so happy I did.  This is the most refreshing face wash I've tried out and best of all doesn't dry out my skin like so many have in the past. I love the fact it's made from witch hazel as it seems to work wonders for my face and the natural ingredients just makes the product shine even more to me.

I love this brand! the multi-active toner is just incredible. It's so refreshing spraying this all over my face and yeah I want it in a bigger size. The downside is the cost however its a well established brand so pretty sure it's worth the hype.

Like stated above,  an amazing face wash which kept my skin really clear and very soft. A little bit of this product goes a long way and the gel didn't irritate my skin which is a bonus! The smell is quite clinical in my opinion however I prefer that to a fruit smell which I've experienced in the past and dislike!

Nivea Soft Lotion Tube

this product is definitely a favourite due to my mum's influence. Nivea is always around my house as it's her favourite brand and it's one of mine too. Their products are affordable and are so moisturising it's incredible. I use this product every morning before I put my make up on and it instantly helps my foundation glide on to my face. It's a must have for me!

Palmer's Cocoa Butter Maasage Cream for Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are an absolute bitch , well for me they are. However I gotta put up with em so why not try to reduce the look of them. I love the scent of cocoa butter so was intrigued by this. It has helped reduce the appearance and I definitely want to repurchase. I just got to remember to apply it everyday as I am very forgetful..

The video should be up soon, check out my Youtube if you wanna have a look or just check it out anyway. If you have any suggestions for good skincare products then let me know. I wanna try out some new stuff
Thanks for reading!

Life Updates +Plans

Monday, 4 November 2013

Hey,
I don't know if anyone even reads this but I'm annoyed at myself for not blogging, I just having got into the swing of it yet which is frustrating as I love reading so many people's blogs. Anyways updates with me:
I've began 2nd year of University, mental!! and been chucked straight into the deep end with work, it's not gonna be easy but I'm determined to get through it. Also I've moved into a new house, there's 13 of us living here which sounds a lot but is less than the house I lived in last year :P It's pretty cool and everyone seems to be nice. I like being in my room a lot as I like my own space.

I finally have found a Saturday Job yes yes!! well getting the money is good, the atmosphere at my work not so great. I've definitely learnt just cause someone appears nice at first does not actually necessarily reflect how they truly are.

I've finally got my hands on a new camera! which means hopefully better quality photos and more videos on my Youtube channel. I've actually posted two new videos recently which I'll post down below if anyone wants to check them out.

I have some ideas for new videos and blog posts so hopefully they'll happen soon

Fixing Things

Friday, 6 September 2013

So I haven't posted on here as I'm just having a bit of a nightmare really at the moment. I wanted to start posting YouTube videos more frequently this summer but my video camera now isn't working and my laptop rejects it.
I haven't been feeling my best lately hence the last post and things have been getting me down.
I also start my second year at university in a couple of week arghh im so not prepared.

One thing I am happy about is that it's Autumn my favourite time of the year :D and that means Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas too (loving life haha).

I hope to not sound sad all the time, guess I just need to sort things out. So I have a feeling my YouTube will be out of action for a while. Hopefully I will be more inspired for blog posts soon as my focus will hopefully be more on my blog for now amongst my uni work.

Weekly Wants #1

Friday, 19 July 2013

So I want to start a weekly post on things that I have been wanting to get. Whether I post this every week I don't know but I hopefully will post this frequently. I am always online looking at new products so this is what I want this week.

 1. Inhibitif Advanced Hair Free Serum 240ml - £29.99
So I recently saw something on TV about hair minimising serums which I found interesting as I didn't have a clue that they even existed. I'm always looking for anything to help hair removal as I unfortunately have naturally dark hair so it's noticeable. I would love tor try this out on my legs as I hate having to shave them constantly!!. After reading reviews, it seems to be really good as long as you use it religiously every day.

2. Essie Nail Polish- First Timer
I have never actually bought a Essie nail varnish as they are quite expensive in my opinion. However I love the colours and after seeing loads of Youtube videos saying how good they are I'd really like to try this one out. I love the colour of this one it's a lovely mint green.

3. Orange Alabama Basketball Top- PrettyLittleThing.com- £16.00
I absolutely adore this top. I've been getting into fitness more or attempting to this summer so I'm kinda digging the whole athletic trend going on. I'm currently obsessed with anything orange so this top is just perfect. It looks so comfy and light perfect for summer really. I would love to wear it at Reading Festival.

4. Olivia Blue Layered Crop Top- PrettyLittleThings.com- £16.00
I love this top and it reminds me of something I saw in River Island but cheaper. Again I love the floaty light style of it. I can imagine even wearing this in Autumn/Winter with disco pants :)

5. Day Dreamer Floral Crown- Dolly Bow Bow- £15.00
I love these floral crowns they are just so adorable. I really love this one as it's so girly and pretty very different to what I usually go for. I would love to get this to wear to Reading Festival (so excited!!). It will be the perfect way to hide the disgusting state my hair will be in aha

So yeah that's my first weekly wants post (I don't know it that names any good) but yeah. What have you guys been loving this week?? If you have any posts like this on your blog please leave a link I love looking at them. Thanks for reading this.

Recent shopping trip purchases

Thursday, 4 July 2013

So instead of doing a haul on my Youtube channel I thought I would show what I got on a recent shopping trip I went on with one of my closest friends Lizzie. It was the first time I got to have a good old catch up with her since being back from university and I have missed talking to her sooooo much!
We went to a lovely little town near where I live called St Albans. If you live in or near Hertfordshire I would recommend going there as personally I think it's beautiful. I wish I took some pictures, that's the plan for next time. I will learn haha :'). It's got your usual shops but also has cute little shops to and cobbled streets. And there is an amazing park which is just amazing to go to on a warm summers day. Anyway so I did a little bit of shopping and got mainly clothes as I am obsessed at the moment. Summer clothes this year just seem to be everything I love, particularly summer dresses. I have been shopping a lot recently and should stop as I'm not exactly made of money. Anyways stop babbling Katie...

The first shop we went to was Topshop. I adore the Topshop there and it seems like a must to buy something each time I visit it.
I bought this coral crop top as I immediately fell in love with the colour. I think coral with a tan just goes so well not that I have a tan. I also wanted a loose crop top as I'm not so keen on my upper body area so the fact it's loose makes me feel a lot more comfortable. I got it in a size 14 as that the biggest size they had and it's baggy on me so the sizing is good. I definitely need to wear something high waisted with it though as my stomach should not be seen out. Definitely wanna tone up during my summer off university.

I purchased my very first lipstick from Topshop. I chose Brighton Rock as I've seen a few Youtubers wear it and love the colour. It's a bright almost bubble gum pink colour and is really pretty. I can't wait to wear it. I tried it on and I like it I just need time to adjust to brighter colours. Trying to venture out a bit more.

Next I popped into Boots successfully resisting my recent obsession with buying nail varnishes and make up. I did however buy a new beauty product. I have wanted something for improving stretch marks for a while as unfortunately I suffer from them quite badly. It's due to losing some weight over years (please don't feel like I'm bragging about it cause I honestly don't want it to come across that way, trust me I know how hard it is!). Anyways I was looking at buying bio-oil as I've heard such great things about it, but I just cannot justify the price of it. Then Lizzie mentioned palmer's to me and I found the Palmer's massage cream for stretch marks. I've only used it a couple of times so can't give a full review on it but maybe down the line I'll post a blog or video about it :)

Woop H&M my favourite!! This shop is dangerous!! I bought this white t-shirt as I really loved the design on it. Every piece of clothing I've seen with blue and white on I just seem to really like. The A has no personal meaning to me I just thought the design was interesting. I'm going to say it stands for Awesome ;)

I bought this adorable guess you could call it bowler style hat. I love hats I just never seem to find any that suit me. Lizzie insisted it suited me and I've fallen in love with it. For £7.99 it's not bad and I would love to wear this to Reading festival. I think it's gonna just add interest to any boring outfit and hide that state known as my hair.

Sorry shocking photo quality :/ (my apologies). I bought a simple belt as I only have one black belt from New Look and its starting to get a bit ruined now. I wanted a belt with neon colours and I loved the Aztec style pattern on this. This wrapped round a cute white summer dress I think will look sweet :)

Right guys so that is everything I got. I got some pieces that are quite different to my usual taste which I like. I wanna mix things up a bit :). I will add prices when I get back home, I've been at my uni house for a few days as I've done some work experience (hopefully write a blog post about that tomorrow).
Thanks for reading :)
